Re: A Scanner Darkly
It's another drug culture film, but with so many different angles on it there could be no drugs and it'd still be excellent.
Basically about this amazing new drug that takes America by storm, and there's a force working against it.
Keanu Reeves plays an undercover detective but he gets so undercover he loses his identity blah blah it's hard to explain.
Watched it baked yesterday and sober today, and it took the second watch to fully understand it but christ was it worth it.

Re: A Scanner Darkly
okay hmmm I wasn't impressed - but then I'm a fan of Philip K. Dick and I found it absolutely appalling that the big give away in the book (re the end) was given in the first 20 minutes of the film.
Highly recommend reading the book - it's not about a force working against the spread of the drug it's the government that is forcing it on its citizens in an insidious way
substance d is death

Re: A Scanner Darkly
Loved the film,,, loved the visuals..... though wouldve liked to see the sex scene in 'normal' veiw coz I likeee her a lot.
Havent read the book, but most books are better than the movie.
Fight Club the obvious exception to the rule.

Re: A Scanner Darkly
The book is fine but what makes the film so good is the twist is hidden till well into the movie,,, you pretty much get the twist in the book straight away. Plus all that subliminal stuff isint in the book... wouldnt have worked anyway if it was and as its a critic on modern life and 'cool' it makes sense to have it in a cool modern format.... The ikea speach at the start is still one of my favorie opening scenes of all time. I also love that that the federal warnings have been altered in the credits.... top top film... extended dvd box set is a treat.
Re: A Scanner Darkly
I loved the book but then I also love P.K. Dick so maybe there is a bias.
Sometimes the subject matter in a book is well subjective - how we interpret it I just don't like the way it was interpreted - really liked Slacker (same director) - but putting Keanu Reeves in anything outside of Bill and Ted and well The Rivers Edge is just gross negligence by the casting director - I think a stick of wood would have acted better - oh wait Keanu is a stick of wood
if you like dystopian sci-fi PK Dick is someone to definitely check out
