Re: Watchmen...
I'm off to see it tonight! Am a bit worried that being a fan of the graphic novel might colour my view of the film (for better of worse), but will drop a few words about it afterwards (without spoilers).
I know someone from work that's going to see it, and they don't know anything about the graphic novel, so I'm interested to find out what they make of it!

Re: Watchmen...
Dong, the ending of the film is adapted to be more conclusive - the novel wants you to be lead on more, as "Nothing ever ends"
I'm a huge fan of this, but my buddy dropped out of going with me today so I haven't seen it yet :[

Re: Watchmen...
Well, I saw it, and really liked it. Some of the fighting was maybe a little too Hollywood wire-fu, but wasn't too distracting.
The film is quite long, so that might put some people off, but I never found myself getting bored.
I was suprised by how much from the book was still in the film, and think it hit most of the important beats from the source material.
Still not sure how people unfamiliar with the book will take to it, but am interested to know!!!

Re: Watchmen...
never heard of this film nor book but will watch...........The Watchmen is a about a team of superheros that look after or "watch" the world around it and society which is supposed to take place in 1985. Be warned: this is not your regular superhero movie. Watchmen seems to reveal a much darker existence and reality into their world, the world of these superheros that we have seen so many times before. This isn't teenage Peter Parker, running and flying through the streets of New York. This is a much darker piece of work including, graphic violence, murder and sex scenes and nudity between these heroes. This film could be described as controversial with all the history, themes and meanings it goes through, but see it for yourself to figure this out. It expands through many historical events, such as the Vietnam War and the Nixon Presidency.

Re: Watchmen...
Ah right, I've seen it now.
It was bloody good, but with just a few too many little nags.
The pacing was completely off so as a result you have the film hip-hopping around. I can't imagine this movie being ANY good if you're not a fan of the graphic novel. it certainly didn't do the writers great justice.
But overall it wasn't awful, I enjoyed myself for the 2+ hours, it just left me feeling that it didn't FEEL like a Watchmen film

Re: Watchmen...
Aye went to see this and thought it was good but not great. (**** DM STARS)
Its quite nice that its slightly different to your usual Superhero flicks but i can see a lot of people not getting it and also as theirs no real super-villain it sort of will leave people disappointed with the old cliche Good vs Evil dilemmas that are present in most hero films.
I like it, it sort of plays off an old theme of "Chaos Order Theory", which is intriguing concept and is pretty much the central theme throughtout the film but not sure many people will get that. Basically out of ultimate chaos can bring order and togetherness. Its a theory I'm not a fan of though its not that I don't agree with it.
Its very similar themes to V for Vendetta and the like I'm not positive but I guess its the same writer.
To the film I like some of the styles, very retro and quite cool. I do think the film jumps a little much and not in a good or clever way like say Memento or other films that use flash backs. This just feels a little awkward and off pace.
The film comes down to its structure which are held together on the characters adn their actions in the film and its underlying theme.
I really thought as with all the adverts about the film, that it would be more about "The Watchmen whos watching what they do" sort of theories and paranoia and the bad things power can do people. These tones were only slightly touched upon in flashbacks and sort of disappointed for the bigger underlying scheme of the master minded chaos-order theory.
I enjoyed it very much and again love the camera work very cinematic but like with the film "300" I found myself beign disappointed with the film in general and lacking story, pacing and good clever witty dialogue. The director has a bright future but he needs to bring in his great cinematic camera shots with proper pacing he needs to learn from Carpenter and Kubrick for sure...
So much negativity from me sounds like I didnt enjoy it. I really did but I came out the cinema feeling why didnt they do this and that and it would have been better if they had done it that way etc etc... But he was tied to a story so I'm not sure how much he could have moved and rewritten the screenplay.
In all a film I enjoyed, it was better than "300" but didnt tantaslise me as much as say "Sin City" which was a film I really enjoyed and worked better as it was many multiple stories in comic form put together for a big picture and it worked better for it.

Re: Watchmen...
Yeah Mouse I think it's easy to criticize a film that had such high expectations. Despite all my gripes with it, there's no denying it was a bloody well-made film, and enjoyable.
To get the most out of the story, you really need to have read the graphic novel. And if you're a fan of the graphic novel, I think you'd find the film lacking in areas.
I notice you said there's no clear distinction between good and evil... Funnily enough that's the entire point of the plot, as what Adrian is doing is in fact right... The characters struggle to understand and come to terms with it (Especially Rorschach). In the film they actually made Adrian into a clearer villain, despite him being mostly good in the graphic novel. It's all a bit :s :s :s and completely open to interpretation.

LOL>....
I disagree with Chaos Order theory.
Don't like what Adrian is doing (he is right I admit). But does that mean every certain amount of time we need to make a catastrophe to bring the people in order and together. Do we always need a common enemy...lol
I know what your saying though Alex but I've never been a fan of that theory. I believe you give everybody freedon, real choice and proper respect adn education and the means to live a meaningful life adn their would be less troubles and less wars...lol but was a good film it get s you talking so thats a good thing.

Re: Watchmen...
not seen it yet and have decided to wait til i can buy it blu ray (rather than dl) so waiting for good quality but im still excited about it.
i guess this movie is without the tales of the black freighter (but i think thats around also seperatly) my memorys of the novel was that both stories followed and mirrored each other and everything that was happening was genuine or violently real
i recon ill read my digi copy before i see it

Re: Watchmen...
Oh yeah I'm not saying the theory's completely right mate, and besides, the whole story's open to interpretation... Is Roscharch really righteous? He comes off as having a strong sense of righteousness, but kills and doesn't have an honest job - despite criticizing civilians that don't work. There's definitely a lot open to interpretation.
What I'm saying is though, in the novel you sympathized with Adrian somewhat, seeing his angle, and he was a lot less sinister. In the film they really tried to just make him the straight up bad guy, so audiences had someone to 'hate' towards the end. While reading the comics, you generally find yourself hating society for what they've done to themselves, and Adrian's plan makes sense - despite being far from moral.
It's a great story to interpret and think about though, thoroughly enjoy it.

Re: Watchmen...
Went to see this on Sunday night, knowing very little about the lore of the watchmen graphic novel or generally anything about the film as I didn't buy into the hype at all, but after watching it I came out of the cinma absolutley gobsmacked and I was literally lost for words. This is the only time that this has ever happened to me after coming out of the cinema. I thought it was a truly outstanding film and one I'm definately buying on Blu-ray the day it comes out.

Nope I'm normally quite quick to criticise films when I come out of the cinema but this was the first time where I couldn't pick fault, I usually never ever say best film ever because I've too many damn films but this is right up there with them, utterly brilliant

Too much blue wang ;-)
Not a patch on the comic but the pictures were so close to Dave Gibbons' art and Rorschach was so spot on, I had a semi the whole way through. Or maybe that was the skintight lycra Silk Spectre's fault...
