Gigs From My Youth - Awesome DVD Coming Next Week
Okay dokey.
Next week Nirvana release probably their best Live gig at reading music festival. It was a bloody amazing gig and I remember watching it on MTV when I was 12 and it blew me away.
One of those moments in history you feel apart of something special.
Not sure people now can see what I see and feel the emotions I felt but boy it must have been like the 70's with Zeppelin and Pistols.
But its released next week and I'm def picking up the DVD.
Kurt and krist are on top form and Dave Grohl is fecking awesome on drums. Feck off Foo Fighters and put Dave back on the drums...
A short video clip:
Live clip of School
live clip of lounge act..
Live clip of Tourettes:
Fecking love them...teenage dreams, love, drugs and booze...man those were the days...
all the above is shit now adays to many complications...

neither can I - she wanted to meet me once - I use collect comics and had a special folder at a comic shop because I special ordered weird stuff mostly indie comics, true crime stuff etc anyone she looked through my folder - turns out she was friends with the couple who owned the tattoo parlor next door to the comic store. anyway they told me and said, awh come on she'll take you shopping, spend loads of money on you and give you lots of coke (not coca-cola)- I said no and said it repeatedly - they kept trying to convince me to meet her because she thought I was "really cool" - well I am but how did she know by my comic spending choices?
anyway this was about 3-6 months after Kurt Cobain was dead and she was in New Orleans stalking Trent Reznor

wow...wise choice as that woman is so psycho its unbelieveable...doesnt help when people keep letting her get her own way as well just because of who she married...lets be honest it isnt because of her musical talent.
Saw a documantary on VH1 once that linked her to Kurts death and suggested it might not have been scuicide

I still dont believe he commited suicide and I think Krist for definate agrees.
I aint going down the whole root but it seemed a strange time for him to commit suicide when things were on the up, only thing falling apart was him and courtney and she was the one fecking him up and he knew it and was getting himself together.
He had a lot of shit we all know about with pain and addictions but I dont believe he had just had enough and was a tormented soul and then blew his brains out.

well my misses had a nervous breakdown many years ago...we had three kids under 7 and two had autism, i worked long hours and she was in a strange town with no family and hardly knew anyone..and when she was admitted into hospital i questioned why she had attempted to take her own life, i also sat with many other people in there...and you'd be suprised how many times you'd think to yourself...wow this guy/woman had so much going for them, why try to end it?
i dont think Kurt did commit scuicide but you'd be shocked at some of the thinkings of the human mind

no, whats the basis of the book about...sounds silly asking i know, but i mean does it conclude he took his own life or does it delve into something deeper?

ahhhh the book sounds like a forefront to the televised version that was on VH1 then. They had an interview with a local psycho who alledged that Cox had approached him to bump off Kurt, he refused to do it. Apparently after the 'documentary' was made there was something strange surrounding his death...cant remember what it was.

Re: Gigs From My Youth - Awesome DVD Coming Next Week
supposedly it was Il Duce from The Mentors who was hired to do it.
however I'm going to disagree with Boosh here - I don't think Cobain wanted all that fame - one of his fav. bands was Flipper and when he thought of success - in the ooh yeah we've made it kind of way he wanted to be as big as Sonic YOuth - that to him was success to be as big as his heroes.
yes quite a few people know who Sonic Youth is but they were never top 40 and I really think he had issues with that a lot of people who became his fans were the kind of people who would beat him up in high school - I think he thought fame was like a cancer and I'm willing to bet he wanted done with it and the people around him wouldn't let him - he didn't want to be some rock star and have his personal life as evening news.
the album with lyrics like rape me - pretty much said it all - and when he decided he wasn't going to do it anymore he became a liability - the cash cow wasn't playing along and was easier to manipulate dead
Gus Van Sandt's film about it gives some insight into his final days there's also the Nick Broomfield doc on it.
I don't believe his wife loved him - I think he was all alone - he hated Dave Groul foo-fucker and Dave wanted fame and money as much as the slag did.
if he did kill himself then he found the best way to be free of it all - they could make money off his name and he'd be dead so he didn't care

I totally agree with you, he def wasnt happy with fame he liked to be taken serious like any artist and he loved bands like flipper, s youth and vaselines. He liked things that are interesting and went from leadbelly to rem.
But i dont believe he killed himself...

I mis understood or misread something about the fame bit - I'm taking decongestants at the moment and they contain pseudo-epherdrine - which by the way is what some people usually in trailers cook down to make crystal meth - so my brain is a bit in overdrive and not necessarily the good kind
The first time I heard them - it was before Nevermind came out, I think it was called Bleach or Bleech - a couple of friends of mine were really into them - less so after the album came out. If they had achieved fame here first (as in if they were English) they probably wouldn't have been as big - being top 10 in the states is an awful lot different than being in the top 10 over here. You kind of lose your credibility if that makes sense - an ex. Arctic Monkeys became big over here - in the states not as much - they were marginalized...so any notions of integrity they got to keep.
Most music that makes top 40 in the states isn't really weird (weird in the sense of being in any subculture etc - there are some exceptions Beck, REM - REM in particular - that kind of fame wasn't good for Michael Stipes head) most of the "odd" looking or acting bands come from Britain or Europe - which is kind of excused because they aren't american - not sure if this is making sense.
It also probably didn't help that models in Vogue were wearing Nirvana shirts and $500 flannel shirts - they became that big in the states - which may be great for people like Madonna or other american pop and r&b crap but not for him. I can safely say that kind of fame wouldn't be right for me either- it's a curse and has an awful lot of baggage and I probably would have reacted the same way
Re: Gigs From My Youth - Awesome DVD Coming Next Week
grunge was hugerly sold/advertised over here but only after nevermind/smells like teen spirit was out and about. I remember watching think was Richard&Judy and they had a whole grunge fashion week. I was like what the feck.
I wore ripped jeans, baggy jumpers, dot martins and all and next thing I know they were showing and selling it on TV for mark up prices and you could then by ripped jeans instead of do it yourself like I did...LOL
Thats when grunge died and reason music in general is dieing as music moguls are entering and selling every time of music but making it soulless. Look at punk, rock, qand especially the shit indie at moment. Hmmmm...
Its so hard to find bands that matter at moment they are there thankfully but they dont get much press and only just enough to probably survive.
And NME which used to push new artists is absolutely crap now and far to mainstream.
Saying all this though every now and then after a period of mediocrity bands start to form at the bottom who have soul and talent and it eventually explodes and we get a new period of good music.
But things have changed in some ways and the music moguls are onto new scenes quicker than ever before and then they are pop manufactured before the explosion can take place...

Re: Gigs From My Youth - Awesome DVD Coming Next Week
I was a big Nirvana fan from the first to last albums at the time, but then in retrospect I was trying to find something different for myself I suppose. My older brother was into Metal in a big way and it got me into Metal in a big way but people always thought I was just following him and in Nirvana I found a band not well known that I could get into that hadn't been established while I was too young to understand, and so they helped me form my own identity over music. However they only really served as a stepping stone into a wider world of music I was introducing myself too rather than having it drip fed too me with someone elses opinion attached to it. They helped me find the Pixies, Soundgarden, Faith No More an early Green Day, which in turn got me into punk back catalogues like stiff little fingers, black flag, agnostic front, The melvins etc etc and so spread my musical tastes into Ska, Dancehall, Reggae, Thrash, Metal, Indie (proper indie), Hardcore and Grunge.
In retrospect I find that Nirvana were rather tame and some of the songs are so dull to me now, I certainly don't listen to them by choice any more, everything they did became so saturated by idiots who were just in it for fasion. But some songs still retain that magic which captured my maturing into someone who apprecited music and wanted to write and partake in the band lifestyle and for that I owe Nirvana a lot. It makes me cringe when people who weren't old enough to remember Bleach have it emblazoned on a tshirt. I think that old rockers must feel the same when they see people with LedZep t-shirts on.
The voice inside my head goes straight back to Nam "You don't know you weren't there man!" But then I think on all the bands I found through becoming who I am and I have to hold back

I actually find most metal very mainstream and about image as much as pop.
I just like music and people passionate about music.
Nirvana were a fantastic band for their time their image is tarnished by people wagon riding them and selling them out.
They made fantastic music, had probably one of the best drummers and bascists of the 90's and a great song writer.
They werent as grunge as some grunge acts but were labelled as grunge. Compared to Mudhoney, Butthole Surfers, Flipper, Sonic Youth they were tame but none the less they were a very important band and wrote some amazing songs.
The other day I put on In Utero and it was so great to here songs like "Milk It", "Very Ape", "Heartshaped Box", "Frances Farmer..." among others. For me its my fav Nirvana album.
Though nevermind has some great tracks like "Lounge Act", "Drain You", "Something in the way" etc it sort of becoming less important when it grew with popularity for me, none the less I know ita a great album.
Anyway this take me back to skool and arguing with all the ravers and metallers...
