Maxine and Izorpo's hardcore pork discussion PARK NOT PORK!
Thought I'd move it over here.
I have the Maximum Rock-N-Roll NOFX CD, which is pretty damn raw! They have changed so much and in my opinion improved a lot over the years! I've only ever managed to catch NOFX once and that was in Birmingham a couple of years back on my birthday. Definitely does not compare to the scene that you were once part of though! That's so cool that you got to see all those bands. I was born just a little bit too late to catch all those amazing bands.
I'd say that Eye Hate God were relatively known over here. Which grindcore bands came out of New Orleans? Not listened to grindcore for a while. It makes me laugh, usually.
Gorilla Biscuits were late 80s. I think they played CBGBs and that kind of area.izorpo wrote:no, I'm not familiar with them
NOFX stayed with us for a week because their van broke down, 2 girls that lived in the squat would put on the hardcore shows usually at American Legion and VFW halls - there is a video they put out in 87 that took place at a bbq I'm in it dressed all in black with a black mohawk. I think I'm spinning around. They teased the hell out of me the entire time. This started after the guy Dave (he was far east Asian), while watching Another State of Mind crawled in my bed - tried to make all kinds of moves on me and I kicked his ass. I was really surprised when I came over here and saw people wearing their t-shirts and then them being on GH was just really really weird. I think they are bigger over here than in the states. My guess is they don't consider Ramen noodles a feast any more.
some of the gigs I saw back then GBH, Rhythm Pigs, Black Flag, Mad Parade, LDS, Bl'ast, Bomb, DI, Dag Nasty, JFA, Corrosion of Conformity, Angry Samoans, Graveyard Rodeo, Naked Raygun etc - lots of fly by night bands - trying to rack my brain to remember them all - I wasn't always in the right state of mind - I had a tendency to ahem..."alter my reality" sometimes 3-4 times a week plus loads of alcohol - my memory is shot. If you ever see ancient copies of Maximum Rock-n-Roll have a thumb through New Orleans was often included
The hardcore scene in New Orleans was really weird - it was a meshing of hardcore and metal heads strange place - strange times. One of the guys I lived with in the squat went on to be in a band called Eye Hate God - another band I didn't realize were known outside of New Orleans. There is still a big music scene there now it's from the meshing of hardcore and metal called "grindcore" but now mostly metal Pantera lives in New Orleans - also Clutch, Weedeater, Nut - numerous endeavours by one of my oldest friends from a band Gimp (yes the ones that sued Trent Reznor when he tried to steal their name) He's still involved heavily in the music scene there. He wrote this book from his published blog about Katrina.

Those seat buckles are a little too tight, aren't they, Maxxine?
Also, I don't think they were oxygen masks that dropped down. Not in leather.

I quite liked the feel of the leather against my skin though.

I'm pretty much the same as you dude. Also Liberal Animation, the PMRC Can Suck On This vinyl, Ribbed, I Heard They Suck Live and War on Errorism. I think War on Errorism was the latest thing I bought. Never got their CD with Rancid or the newest stuff. I feel like I should though, just for completeness.ICHI wrote:I have Maximum Rock and Roll too follewed them right through S&M Airways, Punk in Drublic, Heavy Petting Zoo, Longest Line, White Trash 2 heebs and a bean, The Longest Line, So long and thanks for all the shoes, The Decline to pump up the Vallium. What else did the guy from Fugazi do?
Re: Maxine and Izorpo's hardcore pork discussion PARK NOT PORK!
Oh yeah, Minor Threat of course. How the hell could I forget about them?

Can't beat a good bit of hardcore porking.
Re: Maxine and Izorpo's hardcore pork discussion PARK NOT PORK!
Eye Hate God got a record deal because of Pepper that went on to play in COC - that's the way it works in NOLA - friend in the gutter you stick your hand out and pull 'em out of it - it's what you do.
Dan't say anything about what went on NYC I'm from the south we do things a little bit differently there
here's Gimp at myspace - don't exist any more as my "brother" and best friend Rob died of cancer in 2003 - just remember the only thing worse than being gimp is seeing (or in this case) hearing GIMP
http://www.myspace.com/gimpnola
this is NUT opening with the most atrocious version of Boston's More than a Feeling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiQsv3Q5P8Y
Graveyard Rodeo at myspace
http://www.myspace.com/graveyardrodeo
here's Bevis with his band Star of Kaos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FsB0nBibFg&feature=channel_page
here's a band I saw back in the day this is from one of their gigs in the 90's - Crash Worship
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq5RamhrN2s
If you are really interested in grindcore music from New Orleans contact Mike Bevis he's mates with me at facebook just contact him and he'll put you in the right direction. I've known him since he was 16 and I was 18 - just tell him Michele in England suggested you write to him about music there here I am at Facebook https://www.facebook.com/inbox/?ref=mb#/profile.php?id=647813197&ref=name
I left NOLA in 95 and moved to Chicago came back for about 6-7 months in 97 then back to Chicago and upstate NY (Rochester) moved over here in 2002 so my knowledge of the scene is rather dated
as for NOFX - they were raw back then but so were all the bands - it was a violent backlash (at least down south) against the whole Reagan era crap - not all that different from Thatcher I guess - a shit world brings better culture ----usually a shit world brings undirected aggression - intensity which leads to more interesting media. Bush brought what ----better horror films? Punk became homogenized packaged and sold as safe particularly in the 90's (Sex Pistols did Mountain Dew ads and JOhn Lydon hawks butter and Suicidal Tendencies and NOFX end up on Guitar Hero....The Ramones on Lips....it's a fucked up world

fucking hypocrite claimed to be straight edge but smoked lots of pot - The first time I ever altered my reality was at a Rollins gig at the VFW on Franklin in NOLA - came out and someone had set the building behind the place on fire - the sky was ablaze - went inside to the gig and Rollins was - there isn't a word to describe Rollins anger - he was pointing at the crowd- screaming make threats and I just stood there staring like a slack jawed yokel with my mouth catching flies as his face melted off - I turned to my friend and asked can I have another.
Saw Jello Biafra on one of his spoken tours - absolutely brilliant - he's suppose to run for president in 2012 - if Nader drops from the ticket - can you imagine? I'd move back to the states for that -President Biafra fuck me.

Never knew Fat Mike actually claimed to be Edge. I knew they covered Minor Threat's "Straight Edge", but I thought that was a piss take.izorpo wrote:fucking hypocrite claimed to be straight edge but smoked lots of pot
Ironically enough, their cover actually got me into researching what Straight Edge was and in fact, I've not turned back since.
Until the day I die. And all that other true 'til death crap. ;-) So yeah, I'll always be a hardcore kid at heart. Even though I'm out of touch and spend my time mostly listening to electronica now. There's always room in my heart for the youth crew! Hahahahaha!
