Re: Maxine and Izorpo's hardcore pork discussion PARK NOT PORK!
I dunno, the whole Straight Edge thing is bullshit anyway. (She says, with three Xs tattooed to her). As long as I know that I'm true to myself, that's all that matters to me. Basically, you do what you wanna do and I'll do what I wanna do. Then we're all happy.SjF wrote:yeah, to me it just seems like another stereotype that people attatch themselves too, rather than get attatched to them.
The way you've said your classed as straight edge (i.e. because you've chosen not to do whatever, rather than not do it just to be S.E.) seems like the way it should be lol.
But as with any social grouping, there will be those that take it too far. But as you said, aslong as what you do feels like the right thing for you, what does it matter what you get linked to haha.
The amount of times i've been called a scene fag for my hair i have lost count, but as far as what other stereotypical things a scene kid would do, i would say i'm nothing like that haha.
Hahahaha, I might have to start calling you 'scene fag'! :P Jokes! Too many people are judgemental on looks. I learnt that from a young age, the hard way and it's why I gave up caring what other people thought a loooooooong time ago.

I used to hate a load of straight edge people but it was just this one group that acted like they belonged to some kind of church and would preach to people or go to gigs and knock drinks out of peoples hands as they felt others shouldn’t drink either. I have had a couple of fights with some of them but I have had an edge lady to call my own a while back and I have a few friends who have X’d up too so I know they are not all gimps, there are just some that ruin it for the rest. Doing something to look cool and misconstruing an ideal.

Good, I'm glad Lam. I always worry I'm gonna come across preachy or something (see below).LAM1808 wrote:I 100% agree with you there Maxine.
Ichi, I've never encountered hardline Straight Edge like you, but I guess it's 'cause you're Northern! I thought that shit only happen in America! I really really hate the whole preachy thing and people enforcing their views upon other people. It's like those bloody people who stand in the street and preach! FUCK OFF!ICHI wrote:I used to hate a load of straight edge people but it was just this one group that acted like they belonged to some kind of church and would preach to people or go to gigs and knock drinks out of peoples hands as they felt others shouldn’t drink either. It was not just the straight edge kids I suppose but the whole of Leeds seemed to be about a scene. A load of people thought I was an oddity as I knew so many people from so many different clique’s but when I moved there I used to go out for a walk and get myself lost then try and find my way home. I’d pop into pubs on my own and just chat to people. I think about half of the people in that city around my age would have known of me if not by sight lol! But I would have friends that were into smoking lots of weed and listening to hip hop, but would also really like stuff like the pixies and modest mouse, but wouldn’t talk to any indie music friends but then some guy’s I hung around with that would freestyle MC and actually lived that whole “street” lifestyle with gang fights and they wouldn’t talk to the weed smokey people who dabbled in hip hop cause they weren’t “true fans”. They only spoke to me as they thought I had balls being one of about 5 white people at the reggae fest in chapel town and getting up and singing some reggae folk songs and bob marley hits lol! I thought I was going to get shot!!! Seriously I was invited by some Rastafari I had met at open mic nights and when I walked in on the 3rd day of the 5day long festival and asked “How’s it going this year” the reply I got was “Great! Only one guy got shot so far!”
And Emo kids don’t make friends with metallers and punk/ska kids don’t make friends with anyone? It was really strange but having that many groups of friends did mean I could party all week with no downtime :P

The break down of subculture in Leeds sounds like Chicago -you had to belong to one subculture or another - not me and that really disturbed people how dare I think I could get away with being lots of things at once without submitting to one or the other. Pretty much every friend I had there wasn't originally from there
New Orleans was really different all subcultures hung out together - and you didn't have a straight edge movement - it was NOLA after all -it's all about pure hedonism - even neo-nazi skins were acid heads. There was no breakdown of subcultures we were all freaks and proud of it.
The HUbb hung out in St. Helens and from what he told me about back in the day - it was similiar to NOLA - just manic nuts freaks. Having gone on a foundation course at the college there in the last few years- I have to say for a town that isn't big they do have lots of freaks - and they don't conform to just any subculture. Even emo looking kids don't just listen to emo - one was a big fan of the Hoff and even wore underpants with his face on them - she also really liked LCD Soundsystem and The Knife. I was old enough to be their mum and we'd sit and talk about media and music for hours. It was an art course though so you expect to meet freaks on those.
Now that I am going to uni at Chester - there aren't many freaks - just me and The Hubb - I have one friend from the midlands from a place called Redditch and although he is a punk he also likes Daft Punk but thinks my music taste are weird - he also calls me the crazy American but we've gone out and got pissed together so maybe he bases it on that.

maximmortal wrote:That is one of the many definitions.
I do call myself Straight Edge, but I don't abstain from sex.
It's one of those things that will be argued for many generations.
Basically, I abstain from those things for my own reasons, not because I wanted to be Straight Edge. However, I like the term and the ideals it's supposed to represent. Unfortunately, it has a lot of stigma attached to it. As long as I know I'm doing the right thing for me, that's all that matters really.
there's nothing wrong with making a choice for yourself - it's people that try to indoctrinate people into their ideology that's the problem - coming from the land of indoctrination and extremism I can smell that coming miles away.
when I was young it was always about over-indulgence - rather like truth or dare - never chose truth never chose dare it had to be quadruple dare- on some levels I am still extreme even though I have mellowed somewhat in my middle age. Now I use it primarily in my art
I am an experience junkie - as Gibby once said "It's better to regret something you have done than to regret something haven't done and when you see your mum this weekend tell her SATAN SATAN SATAN"

Anyway, I will talk more on the subject of punk culture, but right now I have to get back to examining some jeans for various bodily fluids. I like the old scratch 'n' sniff technique myself.

Re: Maxine and Izorpo's hardcore pork discussion PARK NOT PORK!
ooh Flipper was listening to them a few days ago Ha Ha Ha and Brainwashed - oh yes those were the days
Max- these days I listen to mostly experimental or electronic music some industrial, some noise - "music made by machines because they don't make mistakes" Nurse with Wound, Coil, Vuneny (they are from Bosnia - interesting electronic indie band some vids at youtube), LCD Soundsystem of course, Scorn, Plaid, COH The Knife, etc I still listen to Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle, Whitehouse, Laibach, Einsturzende Neubauten, Tear Garden, The Legendary Pink Dots, The Residents, Negativland.
Sometimes I will listen to Skinny Puppy or My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult (they were my fav. Wax Trax band). Industrial dance from the late 80's early 90's.
My music taste have always been somewhat eclectic- even when listening to hardcore I was still listening to other stuff - at the same time I was listening to the Dead Kennedys I was listening to Alien Sex Fiend - schizophrenic music inclinations.

you pair both like glitch stuff like warp too - speaking of which I've sent you a FR on last.fm Izzi , it's wicked, lists all the stuff I'm listening to, and also lets me have a nosey at what others are listening to, great way to find new tunes. - Found some great tracks on Maxxxi's recently played stuff (glitch electronics) and bluebear (big godflesh/killing joke/prong/post rock fan), dunno why LAM only has teletubbies and smurf albums?

Warp have got some anniversary stuff out right now. I didn't even realise! Was tempted to buy it, but then realised I could probably acquire it myself.

I finally was able to remember the password - after about the 17th try - figures. I like Godflesh- haven't listened to them in years though.
sent Maxx an FR there says we have zero music compatibility though haha if she hasn't heard of them recommend Coil vs. Elph Worship the Glitch
also for noise check out Zipperspy that is my friend Maria's music she use to work with SRL (Survival Research Laboratories) - I don't believe she did the music for this but they are some wacky artist to check out

I love it! I'm slightly biased though, as my friend used to work for 'em.
